My Life with Birds (and their nests)
When a hummingbird mama built her nest outside my kitchen window I watched, captivated for weeks, during the nest's construction. Who knew it took a female hummingbird so long to build such a tiny home? That experience triggered the creation of my book Mama Built a Little Nest.
Years later, a wren built her nest inside my sister's kitchen - it's a long story involving not having a dog-door for her dog, leaving the back door open for her dog, a wren couple flew in and built a nest - my sister graciously left her door open for over a month, so the parent wrens could come and go as needed to find food and return to their nest. Once the chicks fledged, my sister hurriedly shooed them outside, shut her door, and installed a doggy-door.
I am a bonafide bird stalker, in the sense that when I'm not writing, you may find me immersed with birds and their lives - somewhere out in nature: through a camera lens, through a window, through my eyes and ears, watching, listening, observing and enjoying them. Spending time immersed in their lives brings me joy and inspiration. I am grateful for the stories birds have given me.
Below are some bird images I have captured with my camera. Enjoy!
